The Latin style of dancing Argentine Tango now predominates the dance floors of Buenos Aires. PATIO de TANGO teaches this social style of Tango dancing in Sydney, Australia. In contrast to learning and dancing Latin stage or fantasy Tango, the social Tango dance is entirely improvised. Dance Forums
By learning to dance at our tango school you'll be dancing Tango socially as soon as possible. The emphasis is on the connection between the leader and follower, musicality and improvisation. Our students are of diverse backgrounds, nationalities and ages, and they're joined by their shared passion for Latin dancing... Tango Argentino.
PATIO de TANGO activities include weekly Tango dance lessons, special Tango workshops with international teachers who are visiting Sydney, and regular Milongas (a Milonga is a Tango social dance event). See Milongas in Sydney, Australia
The PATIO de TANGO school was formed and is run by Pedro Alvarez and his wife Sophia. Pedro grew up in Buenos Aires (the heart of Argentine Tango) and Sophia in New Zealand. Pedro's life, before moving to Sydney, has been greatly influenced and enriched by Tango music, Tango dancing and movement. From the age of 14 Pedro worked as a waiter in Tango bars. It was there that he grew to love the music and dance of Tango Argentino.
It's typical of Pedro that when he worked as a waiter in the Spanish Quarter of Sydney he was known as the Tango Dancing Waiter. He draws on all of these experiences to enrich his Tango, whether he's teaching students, social dancing or performing at a PATIO de TANGO Milonga. Sophia's passion for tango argentina came later in life, thanks to Pedro whom she met in 1999. Because of the pleasure Sophia and Pedro Alvarez have found in dancing, they wish to share it with anyone who wants to learn Argentine Tango.
"Dancing Tango requires simultaneous surrender and discipline." - Deidre Guthrie -
Since bursting out of the salons and dance halls of Buenos Aires in the late 19th Century, the Argentine Tango has evolved into a popular dance form, which has captured the hearts and imaginations of people around the world. Like the cities of New York, Amsterdam, Paris, Berlin, Tokyo and Helsinki (to name just a few), Sydney now also offers numerous opportunities for Tango social dancing in Australia.
Argentine Tango is an intuitive and spontaneous dance which is created "in the moment", utilising variations and combinations of walking, turning, stopping and adornments. As the couple moves with the flow of other dancing couples along the line of dance, the man provides his partner with clearly marked opportunities for tango steps, figures and adornments of varying tempo, size and energy.

The unspoken Latin dialogue as partners respond to one another's expressive tango interpretations through the connection of their bodies has led to the description of argentine tango as a pure form of communication - "a conversation without words". Women and men bring their own signatures to the Latino dance, which enhances the excitement and unpredictability of the Tango dancing experience. Even though certain rules and parameters must be followed, the Tango dancers can never truly predict how someone will interpret the music, construct a dance or embellish it.
It really does "take two to tango", because Tango dancing is more than just one leading and the other following. Both partners are important contributors - as with all good conversations. Learning Tango and this quality of the Tango dance may explain the huge current popularity of dancing Tango Argentina in Sydney, Australia . . . along with its ability to combine PASSION, SENSUALITY and ELEGANCE within one dance when you learn Tango or Latin dancing for that matter.
